Car Restoration in Markham
Restoring a car is a complicated procedure due to its many parts. One thing for sure is it takes patience and time. It involves much planning and research. Even if you plan on doing the job alone, talking with professionals could be an essential part of your planning process. Start with writing out your plan and deciding which parts you will need to order.
The Plan
All good things start with a solid plan. It is essential to understand the process. You must be able to envision the final product, so you know what you are working towards as your goal. Setting goals is critical to executing your plan.
Are you planning a partial or a complete restoration? Realize that a restored car is brought back to mint condition, like the day to come off the assembly line. A complete restoration is when you disassemble the vehicle and restore every single part of it. If you aren’t looking just to drive it around town, then a partial restoration should be your plan.
Documenting the process is vital. Take pictures and videos before, during and after the stripping phase since it is usually challenging to remember how everything goes back together. Additionally, take notes and create checklists through the process. This documentation also allows you to share the process you went through with future potential buyers.
The Budget
How much is it all going to cost? Break down the project into different parts so you know how much time and money you plan on spending on each section of the car. Often, big projects go over budget, so it is best to set aside some extra for any issues that arise or mistakes that you might have to fix.
The 4 Levels of Restoration
Let’s talk about the different levels of restoration you can choose to undertake. Are you familiar with the 100-points system which is a universal system to rate classic cars? On this scale, 100 is excellent, while 20 means the vehicle is unrestorable.
- Driving Condition
This level is for vehicles that only need some cosmetic work and replacement parts. They are already fully functioning cars. Looking at the bottom of the car is essential, so putting it on a lift at My Team Auto could be your best option.
- Street Show Condition
These vehicles are drivable, look good, and are all around impressive. When talking about the 100-points system to rate the shape of a classic car, these cars should rank between 80-89 points.
The first step to get your car to this level is to get a parts catalogue for the model of your vehicle to give you access to the most original parts you can obtain. Many times professionals need to help to reach this level.
- Show Car
This level is no longer the hobby level; to reach this level, hiring professionals is the way to ensure access to the highest quality equipment and tools. When professionally judged, these cars rank with 90 – 95 points.
Just because you hire a professional doesn’t mean you don’t get in on the job. Collaboration is critical, and the owners can become their experts when it comes to learning the factory manual and understanding all the vehicle’s specs. Old manuals are often found online, at the library, or even on eBay.
- Concours Condition
The fourth level is the highest level of restoration. This level is for auto shows or private collectors. The idea is not to drive these cars; they are so valuable and people want others to admire them.
